On March 2, we opened the doors to the Ann B. Reichsman Community Health Center at Blanket Mills. For many, it is a beautiful new health center in Clark-Fulton. For me, it represents something deeper.
It represents possibility.
As a midwife, I have the privilege of walking alongside families during some of the most important moments of their lives. Pregnancy, birth and the early days of parenting are powerful. They are also vulnerable. Access to consistent, compassionate care during that time can shape outcomes for years to come.
Cleveland continues to face one of the highest infant mortality rates in the country. That reality is not abstract to us. It is personal. We see the disparities. We see the barriers. We see the resilience of families doing everything they can to create healthy futures for their children. We are building on the strengths of those who come to us for care. Our patients are the experts on their lives, and we meet them where they are to accompany them on their journey.
Blanket Mills was designed with those families in mind.
The Ann B. Reichsman Community Health Center expands our midwifery services in one of Cleveland’s most densely populated neighborhoods. This new space allows us to provide prenatal, postpartum and newborn care in an environment that feels welcoming, coordinated and supportive.
We know that when patients feel seen, heard and respected, they are more likely to engage early in care, attend follow-up visits and feel confident navigating pregnancy and parenting. We have been providing this care for 15 years and know that the model works.
This facility also strengthens the way we deliver care. Primary care, behavioral health and, soon, pharmacy services are integrated into the model. Families do not have to navigate a fragmented system. Care is coordinated. Questions are answered. Support is accessible.
What makes Blanket Mills especially meaningful is that health care is part of a larger commitment to neighborhood stability. The development includes affordable housing and child care, helping reduce the barriers that often prevent families from prioritizing their health.
When care is close to home and easier to access, families can focus on what matters most: preparing for and welcoming a new life.
As midwives, we believe birth is not just a medical event. It is the beginning of a family’s next chapter. Healthy pregnancies are influenced by stability, trust and continuity of care. Blanket Mills brings those elements together in a way that strengthens both families and the broader neighborhood.
The Ann B. Reichsman Community Health Center is more than a building. It is an investment in mothers. In babies. In families. In Clark-Fulton.
And for those of us who have the honor of providing care here, it feels like exactly the right place to continue this work.
