Delicia Figueroa has been a NFP patient since 2007, when she had her first appointment with Erick Kauffman, MD, MPH, at the NFP Tremont Community Health Center. Since then, she married, had two more children (she has an older daughter from a previous relationship), and followed Dr. Kauffman to the NFP Ridge Community Health Center (NFP’s main office) in 2015 when he became Chief Medical Officer.
“When I was pregnant with my now 4-year-old son, I sat down with an NFP counselor who educated me about access to health care and insurance options and Medicaid,” says Delicia.
Currently separated from her husband and attending school working toward the goal of a career in education, Delicia’s income is stretched thin paying for necessities like rent, food and utility bills. The Medicaid coverage she obtained with the help of NFP gives her peace of mind, knowing her family’s health needs will be taken care of until she’s stable enough financially to take care of the expenses herself.
And she’s very aware of the value of the care she and her children receive from NFP, stating “Dr. Kauffman educated me about the importance of preventive healthcare, and making smart decisions to make the best use of the coverage I have. Things like not going to the emergency department or urgent care for something routine because doing that can lead to extra costs. If I’m not sure what to do, I call NFP first.”
And contacting NFP first when it comes to her family’s health care needs is easy for Delicia, since another thing she values is the down to earth, home and family feel of the Neighborhood Family Practice Community Health Centers.
